Yanggu Goat and Musk Deer Center

Yanggu-gun has designated a goat protection area in Palrang-ri, Dong-myeon and operates related facilities to protect the endangered Natural Monument No. 217 goat (Naemorhedus caudatus) and increase its population. The protection area includes a research center equipped with an outdoor enclosure, intensive care room, and treatment facilities, and research on the musk deer (Natural Monument No. 216) is also being conducted in parallel. Starting with 8 goats at the time of its opening in 2007, 11 goats (5 females, 6 males) are currently protected, and in 2009, the first successful artificial breeding in Korea was achieved. The DMZ Yanggu Goat Experience Hall exhibits stuffed goats, Natural Monument mammals, and habitat survey equipment, and various wild animals such as eagle owls and water deer are also raised. Restoration research, including genetic resource protection, breeding technology development, and feed development for goats, is being promoted in cooperation with Kangwon National University.
