강원특별자치도 양구군 동면 팔랑리

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This monument is a stone monument with a base of 1.75m and a body of 2.1m, erected on March 15, 1958, by the Republic of Korea Army's III Corps. To secure the Haean Basin, known as the 'Punchbowl,' fierce battles took place from August 29 to October 30, 1951, in the areas of Seohwa-ri, Gachilbong, Bloody Ridge, Hill 1211, and Hill 1179 (Unnamed Hill). The monument was established to honor the spirits of the soldiers who died in these battles. At that time, the ROK 3rd and 5th Infantry Divisions, the 1st Marine Regiment, and U.S. forces, after fierce attacks and counterattacks with the North Korean People's Army, captured the Punchbowl and key high ground.
