Statue of Independence Activist Yun Hui-sun

The statue of Independence Activist Yun Hui-sun, previously located at Chuncheon City Youth Library, was relocated to Gongjicheon Uiam Park in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, a popular visitor destination, as its original location had poor accessibility for citizens, diminishing its intended significance. The relocated statue is installed in front of the statue of Uiam Ryu In-seok. Independence Activist Yun Hui-sun was the daughter-in-law of Righteous Army Commander Ryu Hong-seok (a cousin of General Uiam Ryu In-seok) and supported the Righteous Army by manufacturing weapons for the independence movement in Chuncheon's Nam-myeon area. She composed songs such as 'An-saram Uibyeong-ga' (Women's Righteous Army Song) and 'Byeongjeong-ui Norae' (Soldier's Song) to boost the morale of the Righteous Army, and established the 'An-saram Uibyeongdan' (Women's Righteous Army Corps) to encourage women's participation in the independence movement. After Japan annexed Korea in 1910, she went into exile in China, where she raised military funds in Manchuria and established the Nohakdang school to train anti-Japanese independence activists. Following the deaths of her independence activist father-in-law and husband, she continued the independence struggle with her two sons. However, after her eldest son was arrested by the Japanese police and died under torture, she was devastated by his tragic death, stopped eating, and wrote 'Haeju Yun-ssi Ilsaengnok' (Record of the Life of Yun of Haeju) to document her life. She passed away on August 1, 1935, just eleven days after her son's death, at the age of 76. This statue was erected to honor her patriotic spirit, as she dedicated her entire life as a woman to the independence movement, and to instill a sense of national spirit in future generations. The collection of Righteous Army songs left by Yun Hui-sun is preserved at the Central Museum of Kangwon National University and has been designated as a National Registered Cultural Heritage.
