Why travelers stop here
Bokjusan Natural Recreation Forest is a national natural recreation forest established in 1998. The area around Jamgok-ri, where the forest is located near the 1,157m-high Bokjusan Mountain, boasts beautiful natural scenery with dense forests harmonized with planted forests and clear valleys, and is home to various wild animals and plants. Depending on the season, various wild greens such as bracken, goat's beard, angelica tree shoots, and chamnamul grow here. In particular, the view of the Jamgok-ri area from Bokjusan Mountain is truly spectacular. Along the well-maintained hiking trails and walking paths, you can enjoy a comfortable and peaceful rest by the clear valley water of Yongtang-gol. According to a legend handed down, Bokjusan Mountain (1,152m above sea level) got its name because when the world was judged by water long ago, everything was submerged except for this mountain, whose peak remained above the water like the lid of a rice bowl (bokjugae). While enjoying a forest bath along the walking trails, you can also stay at the forest accommodation facility, the Forest Recreation Center, located halfway up the mountain. The view from the balcony is beautiful, and simple barbecue facilities are available in the front yard for outdoor dining. Bokjusan Natural Recreation Forest has two professional forest interpreters and specializes in forest education (certified by the Korea Forest Service), operating programs such as forest experience for young children, free semester system (selected as an educational donation experience institution), and forest culture programs under the theme of 'Stories in the Forest.' Forest ecology managers recycle trees discarded from thinning and pruning to create souvenirs such as wooden insect crafts and wooden necklaces, helping visitors engage in forest experience activities. It is a 25-minute drive from Cheorwon's security tourism sites (Labor Party Headquarters, Second Tunnel, Baengma Hill, etc.), Goseokjeong, Hantangang River, Jiktang Falls, and Maewoldae, allowing for connected sightseeing.
