Soyangho Makguksu Street

Makguksu refers to thick noodles made from coarse buckwheat flour with only the outer husk removed. In the past, buckwheat noodles were served to special guests in the Chuncheon area, but after the Korean War, people began making and selling noodles to overcome economic hardship, leading to their popularization. Near Soyangho Lake in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, this area is especially famous as Makguksu Street. It gathers popular restaurants that even local Chuncheon residents visit intentionally, bustling with customers on weekdays as well as weekends. Buckwheat makguksu can be enjoyed in kimchi or dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth, or mixed with vegetables and seasonings, served with vinegar, mustard, and broth. It also pairs well with other Gangwon Province traditional foods like memilbuchim (buckwheat pancakes) or memiljeonbyeong (buckwheat crepes). Near Soyangho Makguksu Street, you can visit Jungdo Tourist Site, which offers the ambiance of Uiamho Lake, and the Animation Museum, the first of its kind in Korea themed around animation, making it a great area for a combined trip.
