Livingston Bridge

Livingston Bridge is a bridge connecting Deoksan-ri to Hapgang-ri in Inje-eup. It is a 150m long, 3.6m wide I-beam bridge with red-painted wooden railings, bearing an unfamiliar name that carries a heartbreaking story from the Korean War.

During the height of the Korean War in 1951, amid the Chinese Communist Forces' May general offensive, Lieutenant Livingston, who participated in the Inje area battle as a UN force, was ambushed by enemy forces lying in wait at a point 2km north of Inje on June 10 and was pushed back to Deoksan-ri. To make matters worse, heavy rain swelled the river, leaving no way to block the enemy's gunfire, resulting in the deaths of most soldiers, including Lieutenant Livingston. On his final journey, Lieutenant Livingston lamented that the lack of a bridge over the river had caused this tragedy and left a dying wish to build a bridge here. After the Korean War ended, his widow visited Korea and, honoring her husband's will, donated funds necessary for the bridge's construction. On December 4, 1957, Livingston Bridge was completed.
