Rock Shelter Dwelling Site

강원특별자치도 춘천시 한림대학길 1

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is a residential site of people who lived during the late Neolithic period, discovered by chance in 1962 during the construction of a new building site for Seongsim Women's University (now Hallym University) in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. It was artificially dug into the slope on the eastern foot of Bongui Mountain at an elevation of 150m above sea level, with a diameter of 4m and a maximum height of 2.1m. At the time of excavation, the cave contained three human skeletons lying with their feet centered, covered in 30cm of fine soil, positioned to the east, west, and south. Soot marks from smoke remain on the cave ceiling, suggesting that it was initially used as a dwelling and later repurposed as a tomb after being abandoned.
