Why travelers stop here
Uibongmun Gate is a structure located in front of Gangwon Provincial Office at 1 Jungang-ro, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and is designated as a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. It was built in 1646 together with Joyangnu Pavilion when Chuncheon Magistrate Eom Hwang constructed the government office building Munsogak. Later, King Gojong of Joseon ordered the installation of a detached palace to use Chuncheon as a refuge in times of crisis, and the first Chuncheon Magistrate Kim Gi-seok began the construction. In 1890, the second Magistrate Min Du-ho expanded Munsogak and related facilities, completing the detached palace. In the composition of the detached palace, Uibongmun Gate functioned as the inner triple gate of Munsogak, which served as the king's sleeping quarters and office. Along with Joyangnu Pavilion, it exhibits the typical architectural style of government office buildings and holds great historical value as the only remaining building of the Chuncheon Detached Palace. Munsogak was lost during the Korean War, and as Gangwon Provincial Office was established on the site of the detached palace, Uibongmun Gate was relocated several times around the provincial office. In 2013, it was relocated and restored within the Gangwon Provincial Office building along with Joyangnu Pavilion. The calligraphy on the plaque is the work of Songhaong and Jo Yun-hyeong, famous calligraphers of the late Joseon period. The building has a gable roof structure with three front bays and two side bays, preserving the complete form of a raised gate, typical of inner triple gates.
