Gwangdeoksan Mountain (Hwacheon)

강원특별자치도 화천군 사내면

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This mountain forms the boundary between Hwacheon-gun and Cheorwon-gun in Gangwon-do and Pocheon-gun in Gyeonggi-do. It is 1,046m high and, along with Bokjusan, Seokyongsan, and Garisan, constitutes part of the Gwangju Mountain Range that branches off from the Taebaek Mountain Range. The mountain has a majestic appearance. It is located on the watershed between the Bukhangang River system and the Hantangang River system, where tributaries of both rivers originate. Gwangdeoksan is mainly composed of quartzite, and in autumn the fall foliage is beautiful, while in winter the snow-covered scenery is stunning. Sanghaebong Peak is named because the rock area forming the summit resembles a reef floating in a vast ocean. The ridgelines generally consist of rocky cliffs, providing thrills, and from Gwangdeokjae to Gwangdeoksan and Baegunsan, silver grass fields spread out. Although Gwangdeoksan exceeds 1,000m in height, it can be easily climbed as the hike starts from Gwangdeok-dong at an elevation of 620m. It takes about 2 hours to reach the summit, which is as wide as a plaza and open in all directions, offering excellent views. For descent, you can return along the same route or descend via Sanghaebong Peak.
