Maewuntang Gol (Spicy Fish Stew Alley)

During the Korean War, quite a few people fled from the north to the south and settled in Chuncheon. The reason refugees settled in Chuncheon was that it was relatively close to the north. Some of the refugees, thinking it would be temporary, settled in the Owol-ri valley area in Seo-myeon, Chuncheon. In Chuncheon Dam's Maewuntang Gol, most of the people who started businesses early were displaced people, so even now, many shops use place names from the north in their signboards. As of the 1990s, there were about 20 freshwater fish restaurants in Chuncheon Dam's Maewuntang Gol, but now only about 10 are open.
