강원특별자치도 태백시 장성로 265 (장성동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Hakdobyeong Chunghon Tower, standing tall in the schoolyard of Taebaek Middle School in Jangseong-dong, is a memorial to the student soldiers who bravely sacrificed their lives for their country during the Korean War. Every year on June 6th, Memorial Day, a memorial rite is held for the 18 fallen spirits, instilling in the younger students growing up in this schoolyard the noble spirit of those who gave their lives for their country.

In 1963, when the teachers of Taebaek Middle School and Taebaek High School moved to Pyeonghwa-dong, Hajang-myeon, the Chunghon Tower was relocated and a dedication ceremony and the 8th memorial rite were held, presided over by then-commander General Kim Jong-sun. As a symbol of Taebaek and the legacy of young student soldiers, the Hakdobyeong Chunghon Tower was moved and erected as a memorial monument in the schoolyard of Taebaek Mechanical Technical High School. Later, in 1973, when Taebaek Middle School separated from Taebaek Mechanical Technical High School, the Chunghon Tower was relocated and rebuilt at its current location in the schoolyard.
