Overview: how people reach and move around Jeju

Jeju is reached mainly by air: Jeju International Airport (2 Gonghang-ro, Jeju-si) takes most flights from Gimpo in Seoul and from Busan's Gimhae, and almost every domestic airport has a scheduled flight to Jeju. Ferries from the mainland take much longer than flights but carry cars, and a few ports still run them in 2026 (as of 2026-10-11). On the island the main choices are the airport limousine and local buses, taxis, taxi tours and rental cars.

The sections below give the airlines and the airport layout, the bus and taxi facts with the province's published taxi fare table, the ferry timetables that are currently posted, the International Driving Permit rule, island ferries, luggage delivery and what happens when the wind stops flights and boats.

Flights to Jeju

Jeju International Airport's own booking filter lists 13 airlines (as of 2026-10-11): Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Air Busan, Air Seoul, Jeju Air, Jin Air, T'way Air, Hi Air, Fly Gangwon, Aero K, Air Premia, Eastar Jet and Sum Air. At Gimpo the domestic airlines listed are Korean Air, Asiana, Jeju Air, Jin Air, T'way, Air Busan, Air Seoul and Eastar Jet. Full-service carriers and low-cost carriers all fly the Gimpo route, so compare the baggage allowance rather than the airline type.

From Incheon, the airport's transfer guide has a page for transit-exclusive domestic flights, and most other Korean domestic airports have scheduled flights to Jeju as well. The tickets themselves are sold by the airlines.

At Jeju Airport: where the transport stops are

Outside the domestic terminal (as of 2026-10-11): intra- and intercity buses stop right next to Gate 2, the taxi stand is across the road from Gate 3, and the limousine stand is about 10 m to the right of Gate 5. The car rental shuttle stop is outside Gate 5: cross the road in front of Gates 3 and 5, follow the canopy path towards the Rental Car House and board your company's shuttle at its stop.

Lotte Rent-a-Car is next to Gate 2 on the first floor (064-751-8000), TamRa Rent-a-Car is on 1644-3302, and Jeju Rent-a-Car is also at the airport. The airport hospital is on the first floor near Gate 3 (064-797-2595), a luggage checkroom is in the same area, and a pharmacy is near Gate 2 on the third floor.

Airport limousine 600 and island buses

The airport limousine, route 600, runs from Jeju Airport through Jeju Jungmun to the Seogwipo KAL Hotel, passing many hotels and resorts, with the stop in front of Gate 5. The first bus leaves at 06:00 and the last at 22:40, every 16 to 40 minutes, and the fare rises with distance (as of 2026-10-11). The operator is Samyeong Transportation (064-713-7000). Wikivoyage describes the 600 as running about every 18 to 20 minutes between the airport and Seogwipo.

The airport groups its other buses by number: express buses for Pyoseon, Seongsan and Namwon; express buses on the 5.16 road and the east coast road; regular and night buses via Yongdam and City Hall, and via Nohyeong and Yeondong; express buses to Daejeong and Hwasun on the west coast road; express buses on the Pyeonghwa road; and a sightseeing circuit bus. Wikivoyage lists the airport bus numbers 36, 37, 100, 200, 300 and 500. Intercity bus tickets must be issued before boarding, and the fare is based on the final destination.

Taxis and taxi tours

The province's published fare table (effective 1 July 2024 for all Jeju taxis, as of 2026-10-11) gives these rates. Small taxi: ₩3,000 for the first 2 km, then ₩100 per 167 m, and ₩100 per 41 seconds at or below 15 km/h. Medium taxi: ₩4,300 for the first 2 km, ₩100 per 126 m and ₩100 per 31 seconds. Large taxi: ₩6,000 for the first 2 km, ₩100 per 120 m and ₩200 per 29 seconds. Beyond 20 km the distance rate rises to ₩120 per 167 m for small and ₩120 per 126 m for medium taxis.

There is a 20% night surcharge from 23:00 to 04:00 and a ₩1,000 call fee for taxis that display and declare it. Surcharges add together, so a night ride of 20 km or more carries 40%. Taxi tours are priced by the hour or by route and agreed before the start; a driver who speaks your language can be arranged through the hotel desk or an agent.

Ferries to Jeju

A ferry in port
A ferry in port

Hanil Express sails between Wando and Jeju, a distance of 104 km, in about 2.5 hours (the ship page gives 2 h 30 min to 2 h 40 min). The operator's current timetable shows Wando departures at 02:30, 09:20 and 15:00 and Jeju departures at 08:40, 16:00 and 19:30, and the ships are Goldstellar and Silver Cloud (as of 2026-10-11). Online booking gives 5% off passenger fares, same-day online booking is not available, and the booking system is closed from midnight to 04:00 for maintenance. Vehicle loading closes 30 minutes before departure, and arriving at least 1 hour early is recommended.

Passengers aged 13 and over are adults, ages from 13 months up to 12 are children, and babies up to 12 months are infants. Cars, SUVs, 1-ton trucks and motorcycles can be booked online; heavier trucks must be booked by phone. Vehicles of 1 ton or more and campers need a weighing certificate, and paid weighing is available at Wando but not at Jeju. A bicycle costs ₩3,000 to ship, paid at the terminal counter.

Seaworld Express Ferry runs Mokpo to Jeju on its weekly schedule: Queen Zenobia II leaves Mokpo at 01:00 and Jeju at 13:40, and Queen Mary leaves Mokpo at 08:30 and Jeju at 16:45. It also sails Jindo to Jeju and Chuja to Jeju. A ship listed for inspection does not sail on those days, so check the day's schedule before heading to the port.

Rental cars and the International Driving Permit

  1. Know the rule before you book (as of 2026-10-11): visitors who want to drive in Korea need their home driving license together with an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. The UK government's travel advice for South Korea says you must have both documents in the car and that the permit must be the 1949 type; it adds that UK travelers cannot buy one outside the UK, so it has to be obtained before traveling. Korea appears among the contracting parties of the 1949 convention, a permit issued under it is valid for one year from the date of issue, and Article 96 of Korea's Road Traffic Act covers driving on an International Driving Permit with a one-year limit.
  2. Choose a rental company at the airport: Lotte Rent-a-Car, TamRa Rent-a-Car or Jeju Rent-a-Car, all reached by the shuttle from the stop outside Gate 5 to the Rental Car House.
  3. Bring your passport, your home license, your International Driving Permit and a payment card to the counter, and read the insurance terms before you sign. Photograph the car on all sides before you leave.
  4. Return the car to the Rental Car House with the fuel level agreed at pickup, and keep the return receipt.

Driving rules and habits for visitors

  • Drive on the right. The UK advice stresses that the legal alcohol limit in South Korea is less than half the limit in England, with penalties including prison and fines, and that police take the position that car and motorbike drivers are at fault in accidents involving cyclists or pedestrians; an injury can lead to criminal charges even without proven guilt (as of 2026-10-11).
  • The coastal main road around the island is roughly 180 km long, and the weather changes the driving: the strong-wind and heavy-rain warnings of 9 April 2026 recorded 27.2 m/s at the airport, so do not plan long coastal drives on a warning day.
  • Korea Herald notes that Google Maps is less useful in Korea, while Naver Map and Kakao Map show routes, fares and arrival times and offer some English, so set one of them up before you pick up the car.

Udo, Gapado and Marado

Udo lies about 3 km off Jeju's east coast and had about 1,680 residents in March 2022; visitors arrive by ferry from Jeju Island and disembark at Cheonjin Port, and the crossing takes around 15 minutes (as of 2026-10-11). Udo has two ports, Cheonjin and Haumokdong. Because of congestion and noise the island restricts the rental of cars and all-terrain vehicles, while bicycles and electric bicycles can be rented and the island has a bus system.

Gapado, the island south of Jeju, is served by a ferry from Moseulpo Port on the main island; Marado lies about 8 km off the south coast and is reached by ferries and excursion boats. When the sea is rough these boats stop: on 9 April 2026 high-wave warnings suspended all passenger ferries between Jeju and its nearby islands.

Luggage delivery and storage

  1. At Jeju Airport a luggage checkroom stands on the first floor near Gate 3 (as of 2026-10-11).
  2. Ferry passengers on the Wando route can send bags ahead by the paid baggage delivery service of the port cargo handler Seokpo Logistics at Wando Port or Jeju Port: hand the bags over, confirm the type and weight, name who will collect them at the other end, and pay.
  3. Contact numbers for same-day shipping are 061-555-8814 at Wando and 064-757-3014 or 064-757-3016 at Jeju; explosives, knives, high-pressure gas and paint cannot be shipped.

Accessibility at Jeju Airport

Jeju Airport counts 22 elevators with Braille signs, 650 m of Braille blocks (200 m indoors and 450 m outdoors), 33 accessible restrooms and 119 disabled parking spaces plus 18 for pregnant customers (as of 2026-10-11). Wheelchairs can be borrowed at the comprehensive information counter in the center of the third floor by showing ID, an electric wheelchair charging station is in the General Waiting Room on the first floor, and 6 boarding-threshold access boards are available.

A help point sits at Gate 3 on the third floor, with a dedicated phone and pick-up and drop-off stand in front of it. Priority security search and reserved seats are provided, a video sign-language service is arranged through the comprehensive information counter, and eligible disabled drivers get 50% off parking after verification.

Wind, weather and cancellations

Wind is the main reason trips fail. On 9 April 2026, strong-wind warnings led to 246 canceled flights at Jeju Airport (12 of them international) and 83 delays by 19:00, with 27.2 m/s recorded at the airport and 28.9 m/s on Udo (as of 2026-10-11). High-wave warnings suspended all passenger ferries between Jeju and nearby islands, the provincial government activated a Level 1 emergency response, and the airport issued a caution-level alert to help stranded passengers reach lodging. A cold wave in January 2016 once canceled 1,200 flights.

Keep the last day of a trip flexible, avoid tight connections to international departures, and expect Hanil Express to say that sailing times can change or be delayed by weather.

Tips and help on the island

  • Pick up transport at the right stop: buses at Gate 2, taxis across from Gate 3, the limousine at Gate 5 and car rental shuttles outside Gate 5.
  • Carry both your home license and a 1949-type International Driving Permit if you plan to drive, and never drive after drinking.
  • The Jeju Tourist Information Center is on 064-740-6000, and the Jeju Information Call Center answers on 120 (no area code) for travel questions and complaints; for emergencies call 112 for the police or 119 for fire and ambulance.
