Cheongpyeongsa Temple (Chuncheon)

Cheongpyeongsa Temple is a branch temple of Sinhheungsa Temple, the third diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and is a representative temple of Chuncheon. It was founded in the 24th year of King Gwangjong of Goryeo (973 AD), underwent three reconstructions, and was rebuilt by Great Master Bowoo during the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon, becoming a large temple. It was almost completely destroyed during the Korean War, but in the 1970s, the halls were rebuilt, the revolving door was repaired, and the bell pavilion and monks' quarters were added. The atmosphere and traces of the Goryeo Seonwon (Goryeo Zen Garden), which is over a thousand years old, can be felt, and the area including Cheongpyeongsa Temple has been designated as a scenic site. Additionally, the oldest Goryeo garden site is 200 years older than the dry landscape garden of Saihoji Temple in Kyoto, Japan. The existing buildings of Cheongpyeongsa Temple include Daeungjeon Hall, Geungnakbojeon Hall, Samseonggak Shrine, the revolving door (Treasure), Gwaneumjeon Hall, Nahanjeon Hall, and monks' quarters. It can be visited by boat from Soyanggang Dam, so it is also called the 'temple on an island.'
