Why travelers stop here
Baehuryeong Pass is a mountain road at an elevation of 600m that borders Chuncheon and Hwacheon. It was built in 1973 to replace the old road along the Soyang River following the construction of the Soyang River Dam. At one time, crossing this pass was the only way to reach Yanggu via Oeum-ri in Hwacheon County. Conversely, descending from the pass toward Chuncheon connects to the Sinbuk Dakgalbi Street below the Soyang River Dam, making it a road crowded with cars on weekends. However, with the construction of a tunnel below the pass, Baehuryeong has become a popular riding spot for bicycles and motorcycles. On the map, it faces Cheongpyeongsa Temple with Obongsan Mountain as a reference point. Therefore, the fastest trailhead to climb Obongsan Mountain is at the top of Baehuryeong. As a result, many people visit even on weekdays. Additionally, the summit of Baehuryeong is at 38 degrees north latitude, so a 38th parallel boundary marker stands there.
