Guro Market

In 1962, as large-scale housing complexes and the Guro Industrial Complex were formed along the Gyeongin Expressway in Guro-gu, a market became necessary, and thus this market was systematically created. Guro Market was the first traditional market to establish itself in Guro-gu, and from its early days, it featured fabric, hanbok, and clothing stores, as well as rice cake shops, sesame oil shops, and an alley of eateries. Even today, Guro Market has many hanbok shops because female workers at the Guro Industrial Complex wore hanbok when returning home for holidays and bought hanbok as gifts for their families, and also purchased their wedding trousseaus here. The fabric shops here enjoyed such prosperity that there was a saying ranking Guro Market right after Namdaemun Market and Dongdaemun Market. It is said that the area was called Silk Road as fabric shops and hanbok stores lined both sides of the market. In 2015, a modernization project was launched to improve aging facilities, installing weather-safe arcades and renovating signboards.

Guro Market is located in a neighborhood with many foreigners, including Chinese residents, so it sells different ingredients compared to other traditional markets. In addition, it offers a variety of items at affordable prices, including traditional Korean foods, side dishes, agricultural products, seafood, clothing, and miscellaneous goods. The food options are abundant, allowing visitors to enjoy delicious dishes at reasonable prices, such as hand-ground tofu, thick red bean porridge, tteokbokki, kalguksu served with barley rice, and the 40-year-old Eomma Son Guksu Factory (Mom's Handmade Noodle Factory).
