Choi Sunu House

서울특별시 성북구 성북로15길 9 (성북동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located in Seongbuk-dong, Choi Sun-woo's Old House is the residence where Hyegok Choi Sun-woo (1916–1984), a scholar who discovered and promoted the beauty of Korean culture, lived from 1976 to 1984. This modern hanok, built in the 1930s, retains the traces of his life throughout.

This site was secured through the National Trust movement in 2002 and opened to the public in April 2004. Purchased through citizen fundraising, the house was restored by removing additions made by the family and repairing worn areas before being opened to the public. Personal belongings, handwritten manuscripts, New Year's cards from cultural and artistic figures, and donated paintings are permanently exhibited, donated by the bereaved family and acquaintances. The site also hosts special exhibitions introducing the beauty of Korean culture that Choi Sun-woo discovered and promoted, as well as the cultural figures he interacted with, along with various citizen-participation cultural programs. The main building is used as an exhibition space, the eastern annex as an office, and the western annex as a service space including a meeting room and visitor lounge.
