Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs, Seoul

서울특별시 송파구 가락로7길 21 (석촌동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs are a cluster of royal and noble tombs from the Hanseong period of Baekje. During the Japanese colonial period, surveys reported approximately 300 tombs distributed across the Seokchon-dong and Garak-dong areas, but due to urban development, only the western portion remains today. Excavations since the 1970s have identified over 30 tombs, including 7 large stone mound tombs, pit tombs, and jar coffins. Among them, the largest, Tomb No. 3 in Seokchon-dong, is a three-tiered stone mound tomb measuring 50.8m in width and 4.5m in height, presumed to be the tomb of King Geunchogo of Baekje. Surveys by the Hanseong Baekje Museum since 2015 revealed a structure where multiple tombs were built adjacent to a rectangular platform, along with artifacts such as Baekje pottery, gold ornaments, and cremated human bones. This construction style resembles that of Goguryeo sites, providing important archaeological evidence of cultural connections between Baekje and Goguryeo.
