The March 1st Independence Movement Monument was erected in Namsan Park, Jangchung-dong, Jung-gu, with the heartfelt contributions of the entire nation to inherit and develop the noble spirit of the March 1st Independence Movement, which was waged for the independence of the homeland and the nation from the brutal colonial rule of Japanese imperialism, and to widely enhance the people's spirit of patriotism and love for the nation. Construction began on August 15, 1998, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Korea government, and was completed on March 1, 1999, the 80th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement. The monument's height is 19m 19cm, signifying the year 1919, the date of the March 1st Independence Movement uprising. The March 1st Independence Movement was the world's first nonviolent peace movement and the world's first religious coalition movement of Cheondogyo, Christianity, and Buddhism, serving as the starting point for nonviolent peace movements worldwide, including China's May 4th Movement and India's non-resistance movement.
