Jangchungdan Park

Jangchungdan Park is a national park imbued with patriotic loyalty related to the anti-Japanese independence movement. Located on the northeastern slope of Namsan, this park is the site where Namsoyeong, which guarded the southern part of the capital during the reign of King Yeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, once stood.

On August 20, 1895, Empress Myeongseong was assassinated by Japanese agents at Gyeongbokgung Palace. At that time, many soldiers, including Minister of the Royal Household Lee Gyeong-jik and Captain of the Guard Hong Gye-hun, died while repelling the Japanese. In response, Emperor Gojong built a shrine called Jangchungdan in November 1900 to console their spirits, and held ancestral rites every spring and autumn until 1908.
