Hoeamsa Temple (Yangju)

경기도 양주시 회암사길 281 (회암동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Hoeamsa Temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism is a thousand-year-old temple that served as the foundation of practice for the Jogye Order. It is a naturally auspicious site with three mountains and two rivers, where Master Jigong instructed to establish a foundation, his disciple Master Naong opened a practice hall, and Naong's disciple Master Muhak, together with King Taejo Yi Seong-gye, carried out a large-scale reconstruction. As such, Hoeamsa Temple is a historic site, a representative sacred place of Korea imbued with the spirit of practice of the three great masters and Seon masters. The current Hoeamsa Temple is a space built on the site of a small hermitage that once guarded the stupas of the three great masters of the old Hoeamsa Temple, but it is a place where one can protect the stupas and temple buildings of the three great masters and feel the breath of practice.
