Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Suwonsa is a direct parish temple of Yongjusa, the head temple of the 2nd Diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It was established to serve as a spiritual refuge for Buddhists in Suwon and nearby areas, and to convey the teachings of the Buddha to the arid urban populace. Founded on April 8, 1920, by Ven. Daeryeon, then the abbot of Yongjusa, under the name Suwon Buddhist Propagation Center for local Buddhists, it has since become one of the most exemplary temples nationwide in conveying and practicing the Buddha's teachings through the dedication and efforts of many monks.

Since Ven. Daeryeon, successive abbots including Propagation Masters Imu-gyeong, Son Gye-jo, and Vens. Jeongha, Yang-u, Beopjin, Jeongnak, Jaseung, Seonggwan, and Seyoung have served, renovating Suwonsa, maintaining the monks' quarters, and establishing various Buddhist practice groups that have carried out active activities.
