Gwanggokji Pond

경기도 시흥시 하중동 208

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gwanggokji Pond is a pond from the reign of King Sejo of Joseon located in Haju-dong, Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do. It is private property managed by the family of Gwon Man-hyeong (an inspector of the Saheonbu), who was the son-in-law of scholar Gang Hui-maeng.

Gang Hui-maeng (1424–1483), a civil official and agricultural scholar of the early Joseon period, brought lotus seeds from Ming China and planted them here. As the lotuses spread widely, the area came to be called 'Yeonseong,' meaning 'lotus village.' The names of Yeonseong Elementary School, Yeonseong Middle School, Yeonseong-dong, and the Siheung local cultural festival 'Yeonseong Culture Festival' all originate from this pond.
