Sase Chungnyeolmun Gate

경기도 안산시 단원구 와동공원로 151 (와동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Sase Chungnyeolmun Gate is a gate of loyalty and filial piety bestowed by the royal court to commemorate the patriotic loyalty of General Kim Yeo-mul (1548–1592), who died for his country during the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea), and the spirit of chaste women across four generations of the Kim family, who took their own lives when Qing forces invaded during the Byeongja Horan (Manchu invasion). It is a wooden structure featuring a hip-and-gable roof in the jusimpo style with square pillars. The central bay has a door following the style of a commoner's main gate, with a hanging plaque reading 'Sase Chungnyeolmun.' The building is surrounded by a wall. Inside, it is divided into two rooms: the right room on the wooden floor houses the loyalty gate for General Kim Yeo-mul, and the left room holds the gate for the four generations of chaste women. The current building was reconstructed in 1971 and repaired in 1983.
