Gaengmae Waterfall

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gaengmae Waterfall is a waterfall located at the foot of Ongnyeobong Peak (376m) in Cheonggyesan Mountain, also called Sunjong Waterfall. The term 'Gaengmae' is an abbreviation of 'Gaengmaeng-i', the largest village in Makgye-ri, Gwacheon-eup, Siheung-gun, Gyeonggi-do, and was called Gaengmae Village. 'Gaengmaeng' is a dialect of 'Gwangmyeong', the old place name of Makgye 2-ri, and because it is located above the valley of Gaengmae Village, it naturally came to be called Gaengmae Waterfall. Currently, with the establishment of Seoul Grand Park in Gwacheon, Gaengmae Village has disappeared, and the place name has been changed to Makgye-dong, Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do. Gaengmae Waterfall features natural rock walls and a free-falling form without any artificial structures. The cool stream of waterfall water and its sound create a spectacular view, making it an ideal spot to take a short rest under the clear valley water. It is located close to Seoul Grand Park, offering good accessibility, and is a good stopover while hiking Cheonggyesan Mountain.
