Destination briefing
Why travelers stop here
This is a metal mine located in Samyul-ri, Gwanin-myeon, Pocheon-si, producing titaniferous magnetite, a rare domestic mineral. The titaniferous magnetite mine is the only operating magnetite mine in South Korea, and it is also called titaniferous magnetite because it contains titanium components. The raw ore of titaniferous magnetite, which contains titanium, has an iron (Fe) content of over 48%, so it sticks well to magnets. The minerals mined here are exported domestically and internationally after a series of production processes. Since this is an active mine, general public access is not allowed, so an experience center has been set up near Gyo-dong Gamaso for visitors. At the magnetite experience center, there are several round jars lined up along the path overlooking Gyo-dong Gamaso, with explanations about titaniferous magnetite, where you can check if magnets stick. Next to them, there is a pile of stones to distinguish ordinary rocks from raw magnetite ore. The iron in these stones is used to make everyday items such as spoons, hammers, nails, keys, bottle openers, cars, and trains, while titanium is used as a material for sunscreen, printer ink, and paints. The reserves are said to be sufficient for 30 more years of mining. Nearby tourist attractions include Bidulginang Falls, Hwajeokyeon, Meong-uri Columnar Joints, and geological trail courses.
