Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gimpo Deokpojin is a strategic stronghold of the Joseon Dynasty located in Daegot-myeon, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do. It featured a small military base with a dondae (observation post), a podae (artillery battery), and a pasucheong (guard post). The dondae was a base installed on high ground for easy observation of the surroundings. The podae was a fortification built for the convenience of friendly artillery fire, and the pasucheong was where gunpowder and fuses for the artillery were stored and where artillerymen were commanded.

Established to defend against foreign invasions attempting to enter the capital, Hanyang, through the Ganghwa Strait, the exact year of its initial construction is unknown, but it was built in 1679 along with Ganghwa's Gwangseongbo and Deokjinjin. As a major battleground during the Byeonginyangyo (French Campaign against Korea, 1866) and the Shinmiyangyo (United States expedition to Korea, 1871), the narrow strait in front of Deokpojin, with its swift currents, was also called Sondolmok.
