Why travelers stop here
Located near Dangnam-ri Island, Ipo-bo Observatory offers a view of the surrounding landscape of Ipo-bo, one of the four major river weirs constructed in 2011. It boasts a beautiful exterior, having been selected as the most scenic among the 16 weirs of the Four Major Rivers Project. The area is well-equipped with facilities such as bicycle paths and an auto camping site, and features stunning scenery, making it a holy grail for cyclists along the Namhan River and a spot for car camping and car picnics. It is also famous for sunset and night views. Ipo-bo, once an important ferry port along with Mapo-naru, Gwangnaru, and Jopo-naru where various goods from across the country gathered, now plays a key role in generating and supplying electricity through a small hydropower plant. In Yeoju, there are three weirs—Gangcheon-bo, Hangang-bo, and Ipo-bo—all with information centers and observatories located together, but only Ipo-bo has its information center on the left bank and the observatory on the right bank. Therefore, to visit Ipo-bo Observatory, you must park near the information center, cross Ipo-bo Gongdo Bridge on foot to reach the observatory, or park under the bridge on the observatory side, pass through the Culture Plaza, and take the elevator up to the observatory. However, when using the parking lot near the information center, you must cross Ipo-bo Gongdo Bridge to reach the observatory, which is only allowed for bicycles and pedestrians; vehicle passage is prohibited. Parking on either side poses no major difficulties for wheelchair and stroller access, but the observatory elevator only operates up to the third floor, so the rooftop observatory requires using stairs. It takes about 8 minutes by car from Bukyeoju IC. Within walking distance are Dangnam-ri Island, beautiful with rapeseed flowers and green barley fields in spring and pink muhly and cosmos in autumn, and Cheonseori Makguksu Village. Nearby attractions include Yeongneung (King Sejong's tomb/King Hyojong's tomb), the birthplace of Empress Myeongseong, Silleuksa Temple, Pasaseong Fortress, Yeoju Museum, Moka Museum, Yeoju Insect Museum, and Hwangpo Sailing Boat.
