Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

If you walk along the Peace Nuri-gil Course 3 from Lohas Park past Okgye Village, you will encounter a forest hiking trail that passes through Cheonghwasan and Manggoksan. The section is about 4.5 km long and uses a small mountain path. In particular, Manggoksan features a small trail called the Path of Contemplation and an octagonal pavilion at the top of the sports park, making it a course that is easy to escape from everyday thoughts. It is said that Manggoksan was named 'Manggoksan' (望哭山) because, during the late Joseon period, when King Gojong and King Sunjong experienced national mourning, local Confucian scholars and residents climbed this mountain and looked toward Seoul, where the palace was located, weeping over the declining national fortune. Additionally, Cheonghwasan is associated with the story of Yi Yang-so, a loyal subject of the late Goryeo period, who paid respects toward Gaeseong every day. In honor of him, King Taejong of Joseon is said to have named the mountain Cheonghwasan.
