Imjang Seowon

Seowon were private educational institutions established by Confucian scholars during the mid-Joseon period for academic research and veneration of former sages, also serving as local self-governing organizations. Imjang Seowon was founded based on Muijeongsa (武夷精舍), built by Im Gye-jung (任繼重) after he retired from politics and returned to his hometown during the reign of King Jungjong in the mid-Joseon period to devote himself to academic studies. Later, in 1700, Juja Seowon (朱子書院) was established to enshrine the spirit tablet of Zhu Xi. The current seowon buildings were reconstructed between 1995 and 1998. The seowon faces south, has a sammun (three gates), and features a wooden, gable-roofed Daeseongjeon (main hall) with a three-bay front and two-bay side layout in the shrine style.
