Yeongwollu Pavilion

Yeongwollu Pavilion is a two-story pavilion located within Yeongwol Neighborhood Park, opposite the Silleuksa National Tourist Site. It offers a panoramic view of the blue waters of the Namhan River, Yangseom Island in the distance, and the beautiful scenery of Silleuksa across the river, making it a beloved spot. It is designated as a Gyeonggi-do Cultural Heritage Material. The exact construction date of Yeongwollu is unknown, but based on its architectural structure, it is estimated to have been built in the late 18th century. It is a two-story pavilion with a three-bay front and two-bay side, featuring an ikgong-style hip-and-gable roof, with a low stylobate and a long body that harmonizes proportionally with the upward-curving roof. Originally the main gate of Yeoju County Office, it is said to have been moved to its current location around 1925 by Shin Heon-su, the then-county magistrate, when the county office was relocated.

Meanwhile, this place has been a renowned site since ancient times where literary artists of the era would come to enjoy poetry and refined pleasures. Directly below Yeongwollu is a large rock cliff, on which the characters 'Maam' (馬巖, Horse Rock) are inscribed. A legend tells that during the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla, a Hwangnyong horse and a Yeoryong horse appeared in the river below Maam, leading to the region being renamed Hwangnyeo-hyeon, hence the rock became known as Maam. Among the poems of Yi Gyu-bo, a great literary figure born in Yeoju, there is a line: 'Two horses miraculously emerged from the water, so the town was named Hwangnyeo.' Within Yeongwol Neighborhood Park, there are the Yeoju Hari Three-Story Stone Pagoda, a designated Treasure from the Goryeo period, along with numerous monuments for virtuous governance, monuments of remembrance, relief monuments, a memorial tower for the war dead, and a Greek participation monument, as well as fountains, exercise facilities, and benches, making it a pleasant place to rest while exploring the park.
