Tomb of Yu Sun-jeong and Yu Hong (Father and Son)

This is the tomb of Yu Sun-jeong (1459–1512), a civil official of the early Joseon period, and his son Yu Hong (1483–1551), a military official. Yu Sun-jeong and Yu Hong were meritorious subjects, and this tomb was established in the 16th century. It is the only tomb site in present-day Seoul that honors two generations of meritorious subjects (father and son). The stone figures placed in front of the tombs and the layout of the site provide valuable insight into the customs and systems of constructing tombs for meritorious subjects during the Joseon period, including the characteristics of burial practices.

Yu Sun-jeong's tomb is a joint burial with his wife in a top-and-bottom arrangement: the upper tomb is Yu Sun-jeong's, and the lower tomb is that of his wife, Lady Andong Kwon. To the left of the couple's tomb stands a stele erected in 1567 (the 22nd year of King Myeongjong) to commemorate Yu Sun-jeong's life and achievements. The epitaph was composed by Kang Hon, who served as the magistrate of Hanseong, and the calligraphy was written by Song In, a renowned calligrapher.
