General MacArthur's Inspection Site of the Han River Defense Line

This is the site where General MacArthur inspected the Han River defense line to assess the battlefield situation before the U.S. military's decision to intervene in the Korean War, immediately after the North Korean army's southward invasion. On June 29, 1950, upon arriving at Suwon Airfield, the commander of the U.S. Far East Command, MacArthur, received reports on the war situation. He then decided to personally check the front lines, moving via Siheung to a hill next to the Yeongdeungpo Oriental Brewery (now Yeongdeungpo Park) overlooking the Han River front, where he observed the battle situation. It is said that a soldier defending the position on the hill deeply moved MacArthur by saying, "I will hold this position until my superior gives the order to withdraw." This front-line inspection by MacArthur became a crucial catalyst for the U.S. military's involvement in the Korean War.
