Why travelers stop here
In Yeongdeungpo Singil-dong, there is a street lined with restaurants specializing in hongeo (fermented skate). The first hongeo restaurant appeared in the early 1990s in Singil 4-dong, near the Ushin Elementary School intersection. As more hongeo restaurants opened one by one, the number of enthusiasts visiting the area gradually increased. Dishes such as hongeo hoe (raw fermented skate), hongeo muchim (seasoned skate), hongeo jjim (steamed skate), and ae-tang (spicy skate soup) began to create regular customers, as any hongeo lover would want to taste them all. At that time, there were other businesses in the area, such as Chinese restaurants and general eateries, serving menus completely unrelated to hongeo. However, as the hongeo restaurants thrived, these establishments gradually changed their business types one by one. Thus, today's Singil-dong Hongeo Street was formed.
