Why travelers stop here
Seoul Namsan Gugakdang is a specialized performance hall for traditional Korean music (gugak), established in 2007 to promote traditional performing arts and the excellence of gugak. The venue is designed to reflect the aesthetic of traditional Korean hanok architecture, which embodies Korea's historical traditions and identity. The performance hall is located underground beneath a single-story hanok building, blending harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment and offering a distinctive charm that sets it apart from other venues. In particular, the sunken garden 'Chimsangwon,' connected to the lobby of the basement-level performance hall, is designed as a terraced garden inspired by the feeling of Gyeongbokgung's Gyotaejeon (the queen's residence), providing natural lighting and beautiful scenery despite being an underground performance space.
