Yun Family Home of Empress Sunjeonghyo

The Yun Family Home of Empress Sunjeonghyo is a house that fully preserves the appearance of an upper-class residence from the Joseon Dynasty. It was restored by modeling the Okindong Yun Family House located in Namsangol Hanok Village. Originally located at 47-133 Okindong, Jongno-gu, it was moved in 1996 when Namsangol Park was created. This house, said to have been the residence of Yun Bi (Royal Consort Yun) in the late Joseon period, has a square-shaped layout with the main gate facing east. The sarangchae (men's quarters) is built in a pavilion style on the southeast corner of the site, overlooking the entire city. The daecheongmaru (main wooden floor) of the anchae (women's quarters) is a six-kan space with two-kan depth and three-kan frontage, facing east. The pillar tops are all made with choikgong (a type of bracket) and uniquely use ungong (cloud-shaped brackets) to support the purlins. The roof of the sarangchae is a hip-and-gable roof with eaves on all four corners, and the gable ends are finished with brick stacking. The windows and doors are in the style of double doors with lattice and wanja (swastika pattern) windows, but they have deteriorated. The design technique of slightly interlocking the vertical bars of the fixed window in the sarangchae is worth seeing. On the gable wall of the kitchen, a sarongchang (ventilation window) is placed above the roof of the low servant quarters to promote natural ventilation, with excellent carving, and the gable-end bracket uses typical metal fittings, while the pillar edges and mid-beam chamfering (such as oesamo, silori, mossangsa chigi) are also elaborately decorated.
