Haepungbuwongun Yun Taekyeong's Jaesil

This house was built by Haepung Buwongun Yun Taek-yeong, the father-in-law of King Sunjong, when his daughter Empress Sunjeong was appointed as Crown Princess in 1906 and entered Changdeokgung Palace. The construction materials were reused from the demolition of Gyeongungung Palace, and the wood is red pine. It was originally located at 224 Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, and was relocated and restored to this site. The floor plan of the house is in the shape of the Chinese character 'won' (元), which is rare in Korea. The 'ㅡ'-shaped shrine is located at the head of the 'won' character, situated on the highest inner part of the property. In front of it, on a lower terrace to the south, the 'ㅠ'-shaped main building is placed. The structure of the main building consists of the inner quarters and the servant quarters connected in a 'ㅡ' shape, forming the horizontal stroke of 'ㅠ', with the outbuildings extending east and west like arms. The shrine was restored after being destroyed by fire in 1960, and two tiers of stone retaining walls were built in front of it to create a flower bed. The center of the 'won'-shaped plan naturally becomes a courtyard, with walls built along the lines of the eastern and western outbuildings and a single-leaf gate for access to the courtyard. The inner courtyard is accessed through the middle gate of the western outbuilding, while the servant's courtyard is accessed through a single-leaf gate in the wall extending from the end of the eastern outbuilding. The roof is a hip-and-gable tile roof; the servant quarters have double eaves with brackets, while the rest have single eaves. The outbuildings have a three-beam structure with a gable roof. The overall atmosphere of the house is more suited to a ritual hall (jaesil) than a residence. Therefore, it features many unique elements, such as the main hall placed in the center with the master bedroom and guest room facing each other.
