Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gwangmyeong Cave (formerly Siheung Mine), which began development in 1912 by Imperial Japan for resource exploitation, is an industrial heritage site that preserves the traces of forced labor and exploitation during the Japanese colonial period, as well as modernization and industrialization after liberation. After being closed in 1972, it was used as a salted shrimp warehouse for about 40 years before being purchased by Gwangmyeong City in 2011 and transformed into a historical and cultural tourist attraction. Gwangmyeong Cave is evaluated as Korea's best cave theme park, combining industrial heritage value with cultural value, achieving the miracle of an abandoned mine visited by over 1 million tourists annually.
