Why travelers stop here
Giusan is a mountain with an elevation of 870m, and its name originates from the fact that it was a mountain where rain ceremonies (giuje) were held. As recently as 30 years ago, even the Jeongseon county governor would attend the rain ceremony during droughts. It is also known by another name, Mulbilsan, as called by Jeongseon residents, and there is a story that on the way down after holding the rain ceremony, rain miraculously poured down. The best viewpoint on the Giusan hiking trail is Seokibawi Observatory, which is also the site where the rain ceremony was held. From here, you can see at a glance the crescent-shaped Jeongseon town center, where the Joyang River flows in a round curve. From the summit of Giusan, you can continue along the ridge to Joyangsan (elevation 620m) for a connected hike, and from the summit of Joyangsan, you can also enjoy views from Gariwangsan to downtown Jeongseon.
