Arari Village

Located along the Joyang River, Arari Village is a village that recreates the residential culture of Jeongseon and the Gangwon-do region during the Joseon Dynasty. It consists of traditional houses and a traditional market street. In particular, the residential forms of the mountainous areas of Gangwon-do, which have heavy snow and strong winds, differentiate it from other regions. Representative examples include the Gulpi House, the Jeoreup House, and the Neowa House. The Gulpi House was mainly inhabited by slash-and-burn farmers, with roofs covered with thick bark from the Oriental oak tree. The Jeoreup House is a house with a roof made of thatch created from the stalks of hemp plants after their bark was removed, instead of using straw. The Neowa House is distinctive in that thin, flat stones (neowa) were laid like roof tiles to withstand the wind. You can catch a glimpse of the wisdom of our ancestors who adapted to their environment. The Yangbanjeon Street, themed around Park Ji-won's novel "Yangbanjeon," is also a sight to see. "Yangbanjeon" is a novel set in Jeongseon that satirizes the yangban society of the time, and scenes from the story are recreated as statues. As you walk, it feels as if you are reading the novel. Yangban certificates are also issued for free, so be sure to get one. In addition, the village has a farm tool workshop storing various agricultural implements, a seonangdang (village guardian shrine), and a grain mill, allowing you to see not only the houses but also the lives of our ancestors. The Arirang Museum is located nearby. It exhibits the history of Jeongseon Arirang as well as regional Arirang from across the country.
