Soyanggang Dam

강원특별자치도 춘천시 신북읍 신샘밭로 1128

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

It is the largest multipurpose dam in South Korea and a representative tourist attraction in Chuncheon. Completed in 1973, Soyanggang Dam is 123 meters high, 530 meters long, and has a storage capacity of 2.9 billion tons, making it so massive that it rarely opens its floodgates for ordinary rainfall. When the floodgates are opened, people gather to witness the spectacular sight. Even on ordinary days, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. The dam crest walking path is open to the public, a 2.5 km round-trip walk across the dam to the octagonal pavilion observatory on the opposite side. However, access may be restricted depending on weather conditions. Soyangho Lake, an artificial lake created by the construction of Soyanggang Dam, flows across Chuncheon, Yanggu, and Inje, offering grand and beautiful surrounding scenery. From the dock near the dam, you can take a cruise around Soyangho Lake or visit Cheongpyeongsa Temple on the opposite side. Between the dam and the dock, there are attractions such as the Soyanggang Dam Water Culture Center, the Soyanggang Dam Completion Monument, and a small statue of the Soyanggang Virgin. The road leading to the dam is lined with dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) restaurants and cafes, as well as cherry blossom trees, providing additional enjoyment.
