Dorasan Station

경기도 파주시 희망로 307 도라산역

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Dorasan is said to have been named Dora (都羅) because King Gyeongsun, who surrendered to Goryeo after the fall of Silla, climbed a ridge and wept while longing for the Silla capital. Dorasan Station is currently located inside the Civilian Control Line. Dorasan Station, one of the railway stations on the Gyeongui Line connecting Seoul and Sinuiju, originated from the Gyeongui Line restoration project initiated by the 2000 Inter-Korean Summit. Through this restoration project, Dorasan Station was established in February 2002, and the construction connecting the 4km section to Imjingang Station in the south was completed. Regular operations began on April 11 of the same year.

Building a station building inside the Civilian Control Line was not easy. Due to hazards such as landmines, even a temporary station was considered. Additionally, due to military operational issues, the station roof was constructed lower than originally designed, and to prepare for a possible occupation by North Korean forces, the south-facing side was designed and built without windows. The station has been opened to the public as a tourist course. The KBS Peace Concert was held here, and President Kim Dae-jung and U.S. President George W. Bush visited, drawing global attention, and foreign media also reported it as a novel tourist destination.
