Baekbeom Square (Statue of Baekbeom Kim Gu)

Baekbeom Square is located halfway up Namsan Park in Hoehyeon-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. Within the park stands the statue of Baekbeom Kim Gu, an independence activist, educator, and politician. The Baekbeom Kim Gu Memorial Association established the statue in Baekbeom Square in August 1969 to honor his patriotic spirit in the anti-Japanese national salvation movement and efforts to establish a unified nation. Two months after his assassination, the Kim Gu Statue Construction Promotion Committee was formed, initiating discussions for the statue. The site was chosen as Namsan Park, the former location of the Japanese colonial-era Chōsen Jingū shrine. The statue, made of bronze, was sculpted by Kim Gyeong-seung and Min Bok-jin based on a plaster bust created during his lifetime, funded by donations from home and abroad, and stands 10 meters tall. Under the leadership of the Baekbeom Kim Gu Memorial Association, founded in 1960, the groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 8, 1969, and the unveiling ceremony took place on August 23, his birthday. In front of the statue, a wide lawn has been created, and a path leads up to Namsan. Additionally, within the park, there is an equestrian statue of General Kim Yu-sin, who unified the Three Kingdoms, and a statue of Yi Si-yeong.
