Chuncheon Myeongdong Dakgalbi Alley

강원특별자치도 춘천시 조양동 52

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

An alley in Myeongdong, the heart of Chuncheon, where dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) specialty restaurants are clustered. It is known that Chuncheon dakgalbi originated in the 1960s when chicken was marinated in seasoning and grilled over charcoal like ribs as a substitute for pork. Later, it evolved into a form where chicken is stir-fried on a hot plate with various vegetables such as cabbage and onions. Affordable and plentiful, it was popular among college students and soldiers, earning nicknames like 'commoner's ribs' and 'college student's ribs.' In the 1970s and 1980s, dakgalbi restaurants began opening one by one in the back alleys of Chuncheon Myeongdong, forming this dakgalbi alley. Dakgalbi restaurants line both sides of the alley. Here, you can enjoy charcoal-grilled dakgalbi and hot plate dakgalbi, as well as another Chuncheon local dish, Chuncheon makguksu (buckwheat noodles). An information board explaining the history of Chuncheon dakgalbi is installed in the alley. It has also appeared multiple times in media such as <Infinite Challenge>.
