Why travelers stop here
Located on the right side across from Jongmyo Park, Gyerim Sikdang is the first restaurant in the Jongno food alley, a 50-year-old dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) restaurant. The signboard says '50 years of tradition,' but the restaurant actually started over 70 years ago. Gyerim Sikdang existed before this area was fully developed in 1967. However, when the shopping district was established about 50 years ago, the current owner took over Gyerim Sikdang and reopened it with dakbokkeumtang loaded with garlic, hence the expression. The signature of this restaurant's dakbokkeumtang is the heaping amount of minced garlic. Finely minced garlic removes the gamey smell of chicken and is the key ingredient that makes the broth rich. If you want to enjoy the garlic flavor even more, when the stew is served, scoop out some garlic, mix it with the sauce, and dip the meat in it. Since Gyerim Sikdang shops for ingredients daily, neither the chicken nor other ingredients sit in the kitchen.
