Jongmyo Square Park

서울특별시 종로구 종로 157 (훈정동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Jongmyo is a shrine where the spirit tablets of kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty, as well as those posthumously elevated to king and queen, are enshrined. The Jongmyo building was recognized for its cultural and architectural value and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1995 following a regular session of the World Heritage Committee. Within the park, a well has been restored where successive kings of the Joseon Dynasty are said to have drunk water when entering and leaving Jongmyo, and a green area featuring a statue of Yi Sang-jae (a figure from the Wolnam region) and convenience facilities has been created. Jongmyo Square Park, covering an area of 39,669㎡ (about 12,000 pyeong) in front of Jongmyo and equipped with parking facilities, is widely used as a resting place for Seoul citizens.
