Anglican Church of Korea Ganghwa Cathedral

Ganghwa Cathedral was consecrated in 1900 by the first bishop, Charles John Corfe, and was named the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. The construction was led by a master carpenter of the royal palace, and although there have been several repairs since, its original appearance has been preserved. The cathedral site was designed in the shape of a ship to clearly signify its meaning as an ark of salvation. The cathedral building has a rectangular (4 bays wide, 10 bays long) two-story structure, with the overall architectural style following traditional Korean style, while the layout and interior structure apply Western basilica architectural style, revealing harmonious beauty and indigenous spirit. The Anglican Church of Korea Ganghwa Cathedral was first designated as a Gyeonggi-do Provincial Tangible Cultural Heritage in 1981, then changed to an Incheon Metropolitan Tangible Cultural Heritage when Ganghwa County was incorporated into Incheon, and was redesignated as a National Historic Site in January 2001.
