Old Incheon Post Office

The Incheon Post Office located in Hang-dong, Incheon Metropolitan City, is a building that handled postal services during the Japanese colonial period. The Incheon Post Office was built on December 10, 1923, during the Japanese colonial era. It is a modern building constructed for the purpose of handling postal services, and was built on a large scale among administrative government buildings at the time. It was a magnificent building with a total area of 1,787㎡, about 540 pyeong. Its name at the time of construction was Incheon Postal Bureau, and it was changed to Incheon Post Office in August 1949 after liberation. The overall structure of the Incheon Post Office is brick, but the floor was constructed with concrete. For the exterior finish, granite was stacked in two layers only on the base (the bottom part around the inside and outside of the building), and the remaining upper part was finished with mortar to express a stone-like appearance. Another characteristic is that it was built by simplifying the eclectic architectural style that was popular at the time of construction. Large tower-shaped pillars were erected on both sides of the entrance, and several pillars without capitals (materials supporting the bracket set decorating the column head) were placed between them. At that time, administrative government buildings typically had a dome-shaped tower on the upper part. However, this building slightly deviates from the basic form in its flat plan and detailed appearance, such as omitting the dome-shaped tower. Some parts were damaged during the Korean War, and repairs were completed in 1957, including repairing the slab roof with slate.
