Anseong Jeongmugong O Jeong-bang Old House

This hanok (traditional Korean house) was built as a single structure by attaching the inner quarters (anchae) and the men's quarters (sarangchae). Its shape is a curved 'ㄱ' form with a one-high-rib five-beam structure. It is a historic site that produced renowned scholars of the Haeju Oh clan, including Jeongmugong O Jeong-bang (1522–1625), Cheonpagong O Sang (1614–1672), and Chungjeonggong O Du-in (1624–1689). Deokbong Village, where Anseong Jeongmugong O Jeong-bang Old House is located, houses Deokbong Seowon (a royal academy), O Jeong-bang's old house, and the tombs of clan members, showcasing the history of the Haeju Oh clan. According to records left by O Haek, O Jeong-bang's grandson, the old house was first built in 1510 by O Hyeon-gyeong, the founder of the Deokbong-ri settlement, and was moved to its current location in 1650. The hanging board 'Toejeondang [退全堂]' in the sarangchae is said to have been inscribed with the calligraphy of Uam Song Si-yeol in 1662, bearing O Jeong-bang's pen name. This house features a gate quarters (mungangchae) at the front, with the anchae and sarangchae connected as one building inside, and a shrine (sadang) located behind the sarangchae within a separate wall. The construction period and circumstances of this house are well-documented. Although the original appearance from the 16th century is no longer preserved, the condition of the woodwork is excellent, and the wooden architecture techniques are demonstrated at a high level in the anchae's wooden veranda and the windows installed in the kitchen loft. The method of chamfering the corners of pillars into octagonal shapes in the sarangchae is also seen in the sarangchae of the Yongin Hansan Yi Clan Eum-aegongpa Old House, a characteristic that appears in nearby regions from a similar period.
