Yangju Hyanggyo

경기도 양주시 부흥로1423번길 50 (유양동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Yangju Hyanggyo was a local educational institution established in the first year of King Taejong of Joseon (1410) that produced many Confucian scholars. It was completely destroyed during the Japanese invasion of 1592 (Imjin War) and rebuilt in 1610, but was again lost during the Korean War in 1950. After the war, Confucian scholars gathered their efforts to first restore the Daeseongjeon (main shrine), and in 1984 the Myeongnyundang (lecture hall) was restored, leading to its present state. Yangju Hyanggyo enshrines the spirit tablets of the Five Sages of ancient China and the Two Masters of the Song Dynasty, as well as 18 sages from the Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon dynasties, commemorating their virtuous deeds.
