경기도 양주시 장흥면 부곡리 산 35-1

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The tomb of Martyr Hwang Sayeong Alexius is the grave of Hwang Sayeong, a Catholic martyr from the late Joseon Dynasty, famous for the Hwang Sayeong Baekseo Incident. Located in the Hwang family ancestral burial ground on the slopes of Heungbok Mountain, an area called Gamagol, it is also known as the Tomb of Hwang Sayeong in Gamagol.

Hwang Sayeong (1775–1801, Alexius) was born as a posthumous child of Hwang Seok-beom and Lee Yun-hye in Ahyeon, Seoul, from the Changwon Hwang clan's Panyungong branch, a Namin faction family. He married Jeong Myeong-ryeon (also known as Nanju) Maria. This became a crucial turning point for his encounter with Catholicism, and in the same year, he learned Catholic doctrine from his wife's uncles and his wife's uncle-in-law, Yi Seung-hun Peter, and converted. After conversion, Hwang Sayeong abandoned the government post promised by the king, studied doctrine day and night, and deepened his faith through discussions with Jeong Yak-jong and Hong Nak-min.
